HoLEP is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—an enlargement of the prostate gland commonly seen in older men. The procedure uses a holmium laser to precisely remove the obstructive portion of the prostate that is causing urinary symptoms.
Who Needs ?
- Have significant urinary symptoms due to BPH (like weak stream,
- incomplete bladder emptying, frequent urination).
- Have a very large prostate.
- Do not respond well to medication.
- Prefer a long-term solution.
- Are at risk from traditional surgery.
How the Procedure Works:
- Anesthesia
- Insertion of the Instrument
- Laser Enucleation of the Prostate
- Morcellation (Tissue Removal)
- Completion and Catheterization
Advantages:
- Effective for all prostate sizes, even very large ones.
- Minimal bleeding due to laser cauterization.
- Shorter hospital stay.
- Catheter time is usually shorter than traditional methods
- Quick symptom relief.
- Lower reoperation rates compared to other BPH surgeries
Limitations / Risks:
- Requires specialized equipment and training.
- May cause temporary urinary incontinence in some patients.
- Mild discomfort during urination in the initial recovery period.
- Retrograde ejaculation is common (ejaculate goes into the bladder instead of out).
